Our approach shares some similarities with traditional sports psychology, however there are also important differences. We’ve highlighted these distinctions in the sections below. If you have any questions about the course or curriculum, feel free to get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

MENTAL COACHING VS
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY

Firstly, it’s important to note that this is a simplified overview of two distinct approaches. Both are far more nuanced and complex than a few short paragraphs can fully capture. That said, we can start to draw a clear and basic distinction between them.

Put simply, psychologists help you explore your personal circumstances and emotions, while we provide proven frameworks and structures from the mountain biking world for you to trial and adapt to your goals. It’s not an either-or situation, both approaches can complement each other and work effectively in partnership.

Psychologists are often sought out when life feels overwhelming or mental health begins to decline. In general, society turns to these professionals for treatment rather than prevention.

Psychologists, are licensed therapists who assess individual circumstances, explore cognitive and behavioural patterns, and address specific psychological challenges. If you complete our course and find that certain issues remain unresolved, we’re happy to connect you with trusted professionals. In our personal experience, whether you're currently facing mental health challenges or not, seeing a therapist even just a couple of times a year can be incredibly beneficial.

Our mental performance coaching is grounded in prevention of negative impacts and the enhancement of current performance. We focus specifically on the relationship between mountain biking, both competitive and recreational and mental wellbeing. Through mindset coaching, we offer practical frameworks and perspective shifts that help build self-worth, boost performance, and sustain a sense of fulfilment and joy in one’s passion. Rather than analysing an individual's state of mind, the course shares proven strategies and real-world examples from the athletes and educators who developed it.
